#DataDiscussions with Louise ShortenData Discussions with Louise Shorten

In this week's #DataDiscussions we had the pleasure to host Louise Shorten

Louise is a Certified Tableau Trainer, a former Tableau Public Featured Author, and works as an Analytics Consultant with Perception Consulting.

She also shares her passion for analysing and visualising data on her personal blog gettingvizzywithit.blog

Question 1 - If you could give one piece of advice to a new Tableau starter what would it be?

Louise Shorten:  I would recommend everyone starting with Tableau to create a Tableau Public profile. It's such a fantastic way to see what's possible, learn from others and is an unending source of inspiration. As part of that I'd recommend people check out Makeover Monday and get involved with the Tableau Community on Twitter.

Question 2 - Favourite viz you have made?

Louise Shorten: One favourite would be a visualisation I created for World Breastfeeding Week in 2017. It was featured in the Tableau Public ‘Viz of the Day’ gallery which was a first for me. I really enjoyed the process of creating it, which involved taking data from different sources and doing background reading on a topic that I'm interested in.

Question 3 - If you could add a new feature to Tableau, what would it be?

Louise Shorten: I like delivering interactive presentations using Tableau, so would love to see some developments to the Story feature. It would be great if you could bring images in directly and have more flexibility in terms of formatting and animating. It would also be great if there was a way of displaying presenter notes while in presentation mode.

Question 4 - Best data book you have read recently?

Louise Shorten: I'm still making my way through Alberto Cairo's 'The Truthful Art' and have found it brilliant. 'The Big Book of Dashboards' has also been a great addition to our mini library at work. It provides a great collection of dashboards to browse through for inspiration.

Question 5 - Do you have a data goal for this year?

Louise Shorten: Good question! I haven't managed to formalise until now so thanks for asking. I think taking part in the Makeover Monday and Workout Wednesday weekly challenges is a great way to continually develop Tableau expertise. It's not always easy to dedicate time to them and I have struggled on that front so far in 2018, so maybe committing a goal to writing is what I need. My aim is to participate at least once a month in each of these great Community projects.
