Dashboard Container Friendly Names in Tableau 2019.1

Chris Dunigan

Introduction

Those familiar with creating dashboards will understand the power of layout containers. They allow you to group dashboard items together so you can position them more easily.

You will also know that when creating a dashboard with more than just a couple worksheets the layout tree gets a little bit unwieldy and confusing (see below)

Giving containers friendly names

With the release of Tableau Desktop 2019.1, we’re now able to give these container elements names of our choice.  This will now allow us to better organise dashboards when looking at the layout tree.

In this release, we get the ability to give friendly names to layout containers, images, buttons, legends, filters, parameters, text zones, blanks and extensions.

These friendly names can be created by simply right-clicking on the item you want to rename and selecting “Rename Dashboard Item”.

As well as providing a way of tidying up the layout tree for those neat freaks out there (myself included!) it also provides a way for enabling a cool new feature, also released in Tableau Desktop 2019.1, called Target URL Actions.
