Dynamic Target Lines

In #TodaysTableauTip we're going to look at adding some target lines to your Tableau vizes. For this tip were going to be using the superstore data and setting some targets for the various regions to meet (or not). The first Step Here is our base chart, here we have region by sales over the four years of the data:

Now were going to add in some targets, here I've mocked up some targets in excel for each of the regions and copied them into tableau, In a full development setting you would of course use a proper connection to the excel file.

Now this method for target lines requires using data blending (You could also use a join if appropriate) so I need to ensure the blending is set up correctly.

Once thats done I need to bring the Sales Target onto the chart with the detail shel this will let tableau know that it can be used in the graph.

The final step is to add in the target line, this is done by navigating to the analytics pane and dragging into the view a reference line, which I then set up in the following way:

Its important to note that you want to take the average of your sales target otherwise the target lines will be way off from what you want. The final product can be seen below.

I hope you have found todays tip useful and s always we appreciate any feedback you might have.
