Adding Tooltips to Pills

By Default when you hover over a measure or dimension pill in Tableau you get nothing aside from some highlighting.

This is fine if you're the one responsible for the dataset, and you know it intimately, but when you start moving into a situation where there are multiple authors who may need and require the meaning behind each measure and dimension. You could do this in a document (like Microsoft Word), but perhaps a better way will be in-tableau, through adding tooltips.

The first step is to right click on the measure you want to apply a tooltip to, and select default properties and click comment.

Now you can write out your tooltip:

Now when you hover over this pill you will see your tooltip, which will hopefully be helpful for you and others.

As always hope you have found #TodaysTableauTip a useful one, and we always appreciate any comments you might have!
