Converting Days, Months and Years into Date Function

Have you ever connected to a dataset in Tableau which you have the Day, Month and Year field as different dimensions in your dataset? Something like this:

It’s super annoying right, especially as you just want to start looking at patterns in trends straight away, but you can’t because of the horrid dataset.

Well, there’s actually a really simple way around this in Tableau through the calculation function MAKEDATE().

Create a new calculated field and typeset the following function within there:

MAKEDATE([Year],[Month],[Day]) – where the year, month and day are my field name sin the dataset.

And that is actually it! You then have a new field which is a Date, which you can use and play with.
